If you’re like most families, you’ve probably been wondering how to conserve energy in your home. Many families have been able to reduce their energy bills savings hundreds of dollars in the process by taking steps to become energy efficient. How do they do it? By using two specific strategies, energy efficiency and energy conservation. In this article we will discuss simple tips your family can use to reduce your own carbon footprint.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficient means using less energy by doing the same things but making subtle changes that allow your home to consume less amounts of energy. When done well, you can consume the same way you always have using the same amounts of lights or other appliances while still minimizing the amount of energy you use. There are many ways to do this including:

Sealing your home to keep cool air from the air conditioner from escaping

Upgrading to an HVAC system that is much more energy efficient than the one you already own

Investing in new windows that air energy efficient to help keep warm and cold air from escaping

Buying new energy efficient appliances like refrigerators, washer/dryers, TV’s and others that consume lots of energy

Switch to energy efficient light bulbs

Energy Conservation

Energy conservation is more difficult as it requires you to change actual behaviour around the house to reduce energy consumption. You will not get the same effect, but you can also make a difference with this strategy. There are ways to do this that are not hugely inconvenient. Here are some examples:

Turning off lights as soon as you exit a room

Washing clothes on colder settings rather than warm or hot

Running the dishwasher only when it is full

Using fewer lights bulbs than needed in specific appliances

Keeping the thermostat at a lower setting.
