Most homeowners notice the highest increase in their monthly energy bills during Winter and Summer. This is largely due to the need for more heating or cooling because of the drastic temperature changes during these periods. Sometimes these increases are related to small changes that have nothing to do with the HVAC system. These 3 simple steps can help identify problem areas before they happen.

Blocked Vents

Homeowners tend to forget the areas in the home with air vents and place items like curtains, furniture or even boxes over top of them. While most homeowners do this by mistake, some homeowners do this on purpose thinking that it will redirect the air to rooms that need it more. This is completely inaccurate. It’s also an easy way to throw money away. Blocking these vents interrupts the flow of air to these areas forcing the HVAC system to work harder than it should.

Thermostat Placement

Another factor is where the thermostat is placed. Thermostats can be affected when they are in areas with direct sunlight or hot and cold drafts as these can result in incorrect temperature readings and may put undue strain on the furnace. Thankfully, this can fixed by contacting a certified professional.

Air Filters

Lastly, Air filters are frequent issues. Most HVAC systems have built in air filters to trap dust and dirt keeping the ducts and mechanisms clean. However, overtime and normal use, they require cleaning and/or replacement. If neglected, not only will dirty air circulate in your home, but it can also cause damage by overworking your furnace and air conditioner. Filters should be changed several times per year and high quality HEPA filters are great choice.
