Five Signs Your Water Heater is About to Fail | J Blanton Plumbing

You don’t realize how much you depend on hot water heater until suddenly it’s gone. Water heaters tend not to malfunction without warning. There are several warning signs that your heater is about to fail, which is why you must not ignore them.

Learn how to identify the signs that your heater is about to break down to avoid being uncomfortable, suffering damage from a leak, or spending money on repairs if the heater fails.

Water Heater Warning  Failure Signs

1. It’s Making Strange Noises

Its failing will often begin to make strange noises. Over time, sediment builds up in the bottom of the tank. When the water is heated, the sediments harden, and you may hear banging or rumbling noises inside the heater. Having the sediment drained annually is an excellent way to extend the life of your water heater and prevent early failure.

2. Water leaking from the heating tank

Leaks are a sign your hot water heater is failing. You might see water dripping from the tank or pooling under the unit. Or you may see pipes that drip water.

3. Rusty Hot Water

Rust usually indicates that it needs to be replaced. Rust frequently accumulates near the temperature and pressure relief valves, and it can also  found along the water inlet and outlet connections. If you seem any rusty or discolored hot water coming out of your taps, it’s a sign that your heater is corroding and a replacement is needed.

4. You Have Water Leaks

Water pooling on the floor underneath your water heater indicates there may appear a leak in the tank that needs to dealt with immediately. Small cracks or fractures can develop over time as the metal tank expands and contracts with heat over and over again. When your tank develops a leak, you’re at serious risk of a burst tank, and it’s time to call a professional plumber for immediate repair or replacement.  These components may need tightening or replacing, which are easy fixes. If the tank is leaking, though, you have no choice but to replace your water heater.

5. Discolored water coming from faucets

Murky or rusty water is another of the common signs it is failing. Water heater tanks have a coating that slows corrosion, but it doesn’t last forever. Once the coating begins to thin, rust forms fast.

Rusty water is one way to know if your hot water tank is going bad. It won’t necessarily harm your health, but it can discolor appliances and damage their parts. And it definitely won’t taste good. If the problem is mild, replacing the anode rods can extend the life of your unit. Consider flushing it, as well.
